Frequently asked questions

What is hreflang for?

hreflang tells search engines which page is meant for which language and region – e.g. de for German and de-AT for Austria. That way visitors land in their language.

Why do the pages have to reference each other?

Google only uses hreflang if every language version references all others and itself. One-sided details are ignored.

What does x-default mean?

x-default defines the page for all languages that aren't explicitly listed – often a language picker or the English version.
